Sick Quail

Postby Bojangles on Fri 28 Aug, 2009 4:18 pm

Hi

I have a silver quail that has suddenly began to lose his balance. I first noticed it a couple of days ago when I looked into the aviary and saw him kind of stagger around as though drunk. No he does not have access to alcohol. He also has short spurts of hyper-activity where he sprints around the aviary aimlessly. Other times he will sit propped against the wire of the aviary, fluffed up and looking quite sorry for himself. If anyone has experienced similar behavior with a bird of their own I would like to hear from him/her.

I have googled the symptoms but I have only found references to a disease, found in some American wild quails, known as Haemoproteus lophorlyx. I have not been able to find a treatment for it if indeed this is what my quail has somehow contracted.
