What is this princess parrot mutation?

Postby Rice Meister on Fri 10 Feb, 2006 7:08 am

I recently bought this princess parrot because it looked so different to my normal princess at home. The pink under its neck is far brighter than my normal one's, and it appears scalloped on the tips of all its feathers on its belly all the way down to its legs that are bright pink. the colour of its belly behind the red is more of a yellow than the grey/green of my normal princess. and the top of its head is pink rather than blue. it has one feather right below the violet of its rump that has a deep red colour on the tip of it.

this bird has me stumped. its only a young bird, so i suspect this colouring might moult out, however it has begun its first moult and the colours appear to be returning brighter as opposed to disappearing, however it has not completed the moult yet, so time will tell in that respect.

the photograph does not accurately depict the pink on the birds belly, i will update the picture as the bird was very young when the first was taken.

It may be a red suffused Princess Parrot. If it is, they generally end up with a pink front.
There is a picture of one in Dr Terry Martin's book 'A Guide to Genetics and Colour Mutation in Parrots'

I've got that book at home, i'll have to have a look in there. unfortunately there is not a lot of information about princess mutations on the internet, a search will result in 5-10 pages that all have exactly the same writing on them!

It could really be anything, but the only sure way to know what mutation it is, is by breeding it back to a normal princess.

With the red suffused birds, it is often a result of poor health or lack of direct sunlight. However, some of these red suffused birds turn out to be genetic. It is also interesting to note: Red suffused birds are often carrying the Lutino gene.

Maybe you should go to Terry Martin's Yahoo Group and ask the experts what this bird really is. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Genetics-Psittacine/

i know this post is old BUT LISTEN
MOST OF THESE BIRDS DIE INTO THEIR 3RD YEAR
A FRIEND OF MINE A BREEDER OF 25 YEARS HAD HIS DROP OF THE PERCH AT 3 YRS
there is also a line that doesn't die but it is pricey
Drifting is art!, has nothing to to with birds lol.

hi, just wondering how your princess parrot is doing and if you have any updated pics. I have a 9 month old male that I raised and he has some scattered red feathers in his wings, under his belly and a couple of pink ones coming through on his head. I was worried it might be some sort of deficiency or disease...

thanks for the update, she is simply beautiful! I'm thinking I might take mine to the vet just to be safe, but I'm pretty sure from your pics that he could be a red-suffused also. Thanks again :)
